Eerie yet beautiful. No trip to Camiguin would ever be complete without visiting the Sunken Cemetery, perhaps the most popular tourist destination in the island-province.
Not faraway is the 16th century old Guiob Church. Like the Sunken Cemetery, this structure was heavily damaged during the 1871 volcanic eruption. Today, only the church’s belfry and stone columns are the remaining remnants of that fatal eruption. You can also get a good view of the beach from this site. There is no entrance fee but donations are welcome.
How to Get to Sunken Cemetery & Guiob Church Ruins
From Mambajao, Camiguin's capital, you can hire a private tricycle driver to tour you around the island for the entire day. That's what we did. Just tell the driver to include the Sunken Cemetery and Guiob Church Ruins in your itinerary.
Located in Brgy. Bonbon in Catarman, the Sunken Cemetery is the site of the community graveyard that sunk during the fatal eruption of Mount Vulcan in 1871. In the past, tombstones used to be visible during low tide. At present, it is a famous diving spot for snorkelers and scuba divers. At 20 feet underwater are gravestones that have already been a marine sanctuary and gilded with corals.
From afar you see a huge white cross in the middle of the sea which serves as the landmark of the sunken cemetery. This colossal cross was built in 1982 to pay tribute to the ancestors of the Camiguin people who perished in the volcanic holocaust.
As the sun sets, the seascape gets even more spectacular. It’s captivating to see the panoramic view of the Big Crucifix against the vast horizon of Bohol Sea, enough to make it the most photographed place in Camiguin.
